Hunger Strike for AIDS (14):
December 1st, Hunger Strike for AIDS, we gathered to deliver speeches and promote social awareness of the issue for 11 hours.
HungerStrikeforAIDS.org Published on 2008, Dec, 1st:.
As I am writing this article, what I hear most from my friends and supporters are “oh, only four hours”, “I am very hungry”. It’s moving to see that so many are gathered here, for a common promise and vision; we have chosen to battle against the most primeval instinct: hunger.
December 1st, 2008 is World AIDS Day, according to registration listing from the “Hunger Strike for AIDS.org”, 75 participants in 16 countries around the world took part in this activity. Currently we do not have updated information from other participants in the other 15 international locales. However, the activities that occurred here in the USA at our site have been well documented. From 8am to 7pm, the local participants gathered to perform, give speech and social actions. We gathered 76.43USD of donations, and over hundreds of people signed the banner with “Hunger Strike for AIDS”, there were too many signatures on the banner to really give an accurate count.
Up until December 1st, the organizers of Hunger Strike for AIDS have accumulated 126.43USD and 1600RMB in donation, even though this amount is still far short of our target of 4000USD. The theme for this 2nd Hunger Strike for AIDS is: Support Chinese AIDS activists gather financial support for “China Community Red Ribbon Award”.
We gather and report information on the activities and current situations of Chinese civic activists for HIV/AIDS through the establishment of HIV/AIDS human rights network: www.aidsrights.net and English medium websites. For the goal of establishing a “China Non-governmental Red Ribbon Award” needs concrete financial support and capital, and not something that we as organizers and volunteers on our own. Here we call to all other organizations and institutions that are interested in finding out more about the “China Non-governmental Red Ribbon Award” to access the website: http://www.hungerstrikeforaids.org for more information.
This second Hunger Strike for AIDS has been very successful. We are currently seeking camera crew to produce a short documentary of all that happened during the organization and the effort that went into realizing this activity. Please look out for it in the near future.
As to the details of our speech, activities and performances, we invite the participants themselves to relate their experiences through their own articles. Here we are listing only a few representative photos, the last few of which were taken in the twilight. The last photo showed a peace procession and candle vigil.

HIV patient Wang Qiu Yun HIV Patient considers taking her own life in desperation.

HIV patient Wang Qiu Yun HIV Patient considers taking her own life in desperation.
A Chinese female HIV patient takes desperate measures as her negotiations with the hospital which administered HIV-contaminated blood to her broke-down. We call on the world public and media to pay attention to her plight and offer assistance in anyway we can to promote a solution to this case.
Contaminated blood leading to HIV infection
Wang Qiu Yun is a 38-year old female, a long time resident of Hebi City, Henan Province. She led a normal and happy life with her husband and child, but around January 2005, while others are busy purchasing presents for the New Year and making plans for family get-togethers, Wang Qiu Yun was busy shuttling between hospitals due to a long spell of unexplained fever and general body fatigue. Finally in April, 2005, she was tested by a provincial hospital for HIV and the result revealed that she had contracted HIV. Due to the extreme weakness of her body condition then, she was diagnosed with AIDs and was informed that she may not have long to live. Wang Qiu Yun traced the source of infection to HIV-contaminated blood administered to her during an operation done in Hebi No. 1 People’s Hospital. From other patients whom Wang Qiu Yun befriended during her hospital stay, she realized that because she contracted HIV due to contaminated blood, she was entitled to HIV treatments and monitoring free of charge, a service/ policy provided by the national government.
The difficult road of appeal
However, upon returning to their village, they were told by the local health authority that they have no adequate supply of anti-retroviral drugs available and the market price of such medication were beyond the financial capabilities of her family. Out of desperation, the family filed a legal suit against the hospital which administered the HIV-contaminated blood that led to her sickness. The law suit turned into a 6-month wait, with no updates or further notifications, the family decided to visit the local judicial office to inquire about the case status. They were confronted by hostile officers who refused to offer further information on the case and forcefully expelled them from the office with aid of security guards. Since then, the family have made repeated trip for appeal at city, county, provincial and finally, at the national level in Beijing. But all such appeals were made to deaf ears, in Beijing; they were taken by police and escorted back to Henan, ending their hope of demanding justice to their suffering through the proper legal frameworks set up by the country. During these appeal visitations, they were also subjected to brutal discrimination and Wang Qiu Yun’s HIV status confidentiality was breached, subjecting her family to prejudice and drastically impacting their quality of life back in the village.
Desperation and final call for help
Three years have passed sine Wang Qiu Yun took legal action, and still there are no clear solutions to her appeal of compensation to her loss of job, decrease in living qualities and the medical expense costs. In desperation and a breakdown in negotiations with the Hebi No. 1 People’s Hospital, where she contracted HIV, Wang Qiu Yun has now occupied the office of the director of hospital, demanding further negotiations with the hospital staff. So far, there has been no response from the hospitals’ administrative staff. Wang Qiu Yun occupied the office since Nov 24th, and currently her families are responsible for supplying her with food and other daily necessities while the hospital’s relations department had a representative who keeps a vigilant observation of her daily activities. Wang Qiu Yun desperately hopes to re-open possibilities of negotiations and conversations with the hospital concerned, and has vowed that if no progress is made by Dec 1st, World Aids Day, she may consider taking her own life in despair and desperation.
HIV-infection via contaminated blood in China
HIV/AIDs has reached epidemic proportion in China with an estimate of 700,000 (or 0.1% of total population) individuals living with HIV/AIDs according to WHO 2007 report. The main methods of HIV transmission in China are through MSM, heterosexual intercourse, IV drug injections, and perhaps unique in China, the use of HIV-contaminated blood. Due to short supplies of donated blood, hospitals often lack sufficient serum and blood in cases of operation, creating a black market where private business recruit poor individuals to “sell” their blood for a monetary compensation and subsequently sell these blood to the hospitals. The first cases of HIV-infection due to contaminated blood was discovered in Henan province and have subsequently discovered nation-wide.

2007The First Annual Hunger Strike for AIDS
http://www.aidswiki.cn/index.php/HungerStrike
- Oct. 18, 2006, the Snow lotus AIDS Education and Research Project Organization in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was banned by the Government Home Office under pressure from a variety of reason, resulting Chang Kun leaving for Xinjiang to Beijing on that day. November 30, 2006, Xinjiang Normal University kicked Chang-kun out, Chang kun’s file accounts and Hukou (household registration record) were detained, often resulting in the loss of many of his basic civil rights, hence restricting his daily work life. In Xinjiang Normal University, many fruitless negotiations were carried out. Chang Kun on November 27, 2007 release, “On December 1 World AIDS Day-a hunger strike for Chang Kun and the dignity of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” A few days later, this action (on December 1, 2007 World AIDS Day “Hunger Strike for AIDS”) forced negotiations to commence with Xinjiang Normal University fulfilling the commitments agreed upon the next two weeks to deal with the return of Chang Kun’s personal files, accounts, and Hukou (household registration record). This was done to facilitate the settlement of the issue and smooth outcome of the situation. Chang-Kun as well as for his own safety, of course was not afraid of the consequences of hunger! Chang kun decided to change “Chang Kun’s hunger strike for human rights and dignity” to a 24-hour ‘Hunger Strike for AIDS’. In 2007 there were 48 participants, prior to that support of 4000 people for Chang-Kun! Therefore, I hope we can continue to carry out these activities. Wan Yanhai, a teacher said, “I have decided that from December 1, 2007 onwards, on the annual December 1 World AIDS Day to carry out a one-day ‘Hunger Strike.” Chang Kun added by saying, “At least in my lifetime, I will be the annual December 1, launching it as far as possible, and gathering organizations to launch the ‘Hunger Strike Movement.”In 2005,Chang Kun set the ideal:Devote my life to the AIDS prevention and care work!

Part VI:
Prayer for people who got Hive and the value of justices on December 1st,2008
HungerStrikeforAIDS.org Published on 2008, Nov, 16th:
We would like to give the sincerest gratitude of the world to all those participants and supporters who participate in the “Hunger Strike for AIDS”, and especially to some Christian friends who will pray for human beings’ life, the greatest love, mercy and goodness, the disaster due to AIDS and its impact on people from all around the world at 8:00AM on December 1st, 2008, at Free Speech Steps in the San Diego of the USA..
When we face all injustice, inequality, distorted right and arbitrary dictatorship, we are crying. All peaple, who are bearing a heavy load, grievances and fears, are crying. For those souls that are in a tight corner, they shouldn’t go forth into the brink of evil because of their diseases caused by what they face, And for more people, the motive power for life’s continuation is love, hope, and the value of the existence.
December 1st 2008, this year’s World’s AIDS Day, HIV/AIDs activists and supporters from around the world will be carrying out “Hunger Strike for AIDS” for a period of 24 hours. The theme this year is: the second “Hunger Strike for AIDS”, focusing on caring for China AIDS NGOs and activists, and starting a donation drive to set up the “China Non-governmental Red Ribbon Award”. We’ll be engaging in a four-week long activities in the hopes to collecting 4000USD for this Award. Please support and participate in this effort with us. Please visit the relevant website: www.HungerStrikeforAIDS.org
Up to 2008, November 16th, we have collected registration from 57 individuals from 12 countries. Collected donations include 50 USD and 1100RMB.
Prayer below:
A Prayer for AIDS, A Prayer for the World
We come together as a united people raising our prayers for a common cause.
We acknowledge how easy it is for us to turn our focus on our own lives and own world, but in these days to come we set our eyes beyond ourselves.
We unite in a common prayer for the world and for people. For those who are living in sickness and injustice.
We pray not only for the victims of AIDS in China but for those all around the world.
We make moments of silence for the lives of those we have known that have passed on and in those moments we also lift our thoughts and prayers for the lives of those around the world who have no one to mourn for them.
In this we acknowledge that we are one people, of one heart, and of one soul sharing in a reality that is far bigger than us as individuals.
We understand that as AIDS does not discriminate against gender, race, or social status neither does the God that we lift our prayers to.
So in that we ask for justice, for love, for healing to be poured out over the lives of all who have fallen victim to the affects of AIDS; whether mother or child, spouse or partner, friend or foe.
We cry out for all because we know that all find a place of value in your heart O God.
We lastly ask of you O God to give strength to those who hunger strike for AIDS as we raise money and awareness.
Lord, come alongside us in this and give us your blessing.
In this simple prayer we join together and in this simple prayer we petition to you O God.
Amen
