As I am writing this article, what I hear most from my friends and supporters are “oh, only four hours”, “I am very hungry”. It’s moving to see that so many are gathered here, for a common promise and vision; we have chosen to battle against the most primeval instinct: hunger.
December 1st, 2008 is World AIDS Day, according to registration listing from the “Hunger Strike for AIDS.org”, 75 participants in 16 countries around the world took part in this activity. Currently we do not have updated information from other participants in the other 15 international locales. However, the activities that occurred here in the USA at our site have been well documented. From 8am to 7pm, the local participants gathered to perform, give speech and social actions. We gathered 76.43USD of donations, and over hundreds of people signed the banner with “Hunger Strike for AIDS”, there were too many signatures on the banner to really give an accurate count.
Up until December 1st, the organizers of Hunger Strike for AIDS have accumulated 126.43USD and 1600RMB in donation, even though this amount is still far short of our target of 4000USD. The theme for this 2nd Hunger Strike for AIDS is: Support Chinese AIDS activists gather financial support for “China Community Red Ribbon Award”.
We gather and report information on the activities and current situations of Chinese civic activists for HIV/AIDS through the establishment of HIV/AIDS human rights network: www.aidsrights.net and English medium websites. For the goal of establishing a “China Non-governmental Red Ribbon Award” needs concrete financial support and capital, and not something that we as organizers and volunteers on our own. Here we call to all other organizations and institutions that are interested in finding out more about the “China Non-governmental Red Ribbon Award” to access the website: http://www.hungerstrikeforaids.org for more information.
This second Hunger Strike for AIDS has been very successful. We are currently seeking camera crew to produce a short documentary of all that happened during the organization and the effort that went into realizing this activity. Please look out for it in the near future.
As to the details of our speech, activities and performances, we invite the participants themselves to relate their experiences through their own articles. Here we are listing only a few representative photos, the last few of which were taken in the twilight. The last photo showed a peace procession and candle vigil.
